Spirulina is a miraculous superfood that boosts your health in more ways than one.
It's full of vitamins, minerals, proteins, amino acids, antioxidants, and so much more.
If you're looking for a fully natural supplement to help boost your nutritional intake, look no further!
Spirulina is an extremely versatile and health-boosting addition to your diet.
Spirulina as we know it generally comes in the form of a powder, as this blue-green algae is usually dried and finely ground. This allows you to easily mix it in with a variety of foods, or take it as is, which may include taking it in the form of spirulina capsules or pills.
Some worry that spirulina doesn’t always taste the best on its own, which is why they choose to mix it in with some beverages or foods.

Today, we want to share a variety of uses and ideas for consuming spirulina in an easy and enjoyable way.
1. Spirulina Tea
One of the easiest ways to consume spirulina is by making spirulina tea.
This is a great option if you enjoy hot beverages. If you don't mind the taste of the spirulina powder, you could always mix it with hot water without adding anything else.
However, if you want to change the flavor, try making spirulina tea using other herbs that you like.
You can make peppermint tea and add spirulina right in.
The peppermint, or whatever other herb you use, should be able to mask the spirulina flavor quite well.
Use the quantity indicated on any other product you use.
2. Spirulina in Coffee
If you prefer coffee to tea or enjoy both at different times, adding spirulina to coffee is another option to consider/try.
Mix in spirulina powder with your favorite brew for an energizing caffeine kick.
Since coffee can be quite strong depending on the beans you use (plus sugar and cream help too), it has the ability to cover the spirulina taste.
3. Spirulina in Juice
If you're in the mood for a spirulina infused cold beverage, it's good to know that it makes a great addition to juices.
Get some apple or orange juice (low-sugar if you want to minimize sugar consumption) and mix in some spirulina for those extra enzymes and amino acids!
Mixing spirulina with something sweet is preferable, especially if you don't like the flavor of spirulina, as the sweetness of the juice can help balance the flavor.
Orange juice is a favorite for many!
4. Spirulina Smoothies
One of the fan favorites across the board as far as spirulina is concerned is smoothies.
The beauty of smoothies is the endless combination of ingredients that increases creativity and capacity for customization.
Furthermore, smoothies allow you to add flavor to the spirulina experience.
Simple Spirulina Smoothie Recipe
There's unlimited recipes to incorporate spirulina into, but here's a quick example:
Take a large ripe banana, a cup of strawberries, a cup of yogurt (e.g. strawberry yogurt), a cup of ice cubes, a spoonful of honey, and a scoop of spirulina powder.
Put it all in a blender and blend until the mixture is completely smooth.
5. Spirulina Ice Cream
If you're looking for a delicious treat or a dessert but want it to be marginally healthy, mixing in some spirulina with your favorite ice cream is always a great option.
It is recommended to use a fairly sweet and strong-tasting ice cream so that you won't taste the spirulina, but the possibilities are endless.
Try mixing in some spirulina with dark chocolate ice cream, and you won’t ever know it’s there!
6. Spirulina Pasta
Another creative option is to make your own spirulina pasta.
This can be done in a number of ways. One of the most creative ways is to make homemade pasta and substitute a small amount of the flower with spirulina.
Nobody will ever know that it’s there.
Spirulina Meatball and Pasta Recipe
If you don’t have time to make your own pasta, consider homemade meatballs!
You could easily mix in some spirulina with a pound of lean ground beef, half a cup of breadcrumbs, an egg, half a cup of chopped parsley, some salt, and pepper (along with whatever other herbs and spices you see fit).
Just mix it all together, form golf ball-sized spheres, and bake at 375 degrees for about 30 minutes, then add to your favorite tomato sauce.
7. Spirulina Soup or Stew
If you want a hot meal with added nutritional benefits, you can try making spirulina soup.
No, we aren’t talking about making a broth out of spirulina, as this might lead to some questionable flavors.
However, you could make a simple homemade chicken noodle soup and then add a hint of spirulina to it.
Feel free to add it to each separate bowl so to avoid changing the flavor of the entire pot.
Spirulina Chicken Noodle Soup Recipe
Take four chicken breasts and boil them in two liters of water for about an hour, until fall-apart tender.
Remove them from the pot, allow them to cool, shred them, and put them aside.
In the same pot, using the same water the chicken was boiled in, add some chicken broth powder (you’ll usually need a teaspoon for every cup of water) and two cups of diced carrots, and cook until the carrots are tender.
Add two cups of egg noodles and cook until tender.
Add the shredded chicken back into the soup, and season as you see fit (salt, pepper, and parsley work well).
8. Yogurt and Fruit Parfaits
Whether you enjoy mixing your own yogurt and fruit or prefer premade yogurt parfaits from your local supermarket, yogurt and fruit parfaits are prime contenders for spirulina powder.
Not only will the spirulina enhance the health benefits of the yogurt and fruit, but the sweetness of the parfait can overpower the spirulina flavor.
9. Spirulina Milkshakes
While milkshakes may not be at the top of the health food list, healthy diets are all about balance.
Consider adding spirulina to homemade milkshakes for a boost of nutritional value.
Spirulina combined with the sweeter flavor of the milkshake typically makes for a unique flavor - you're able to use more spirulina without overpowering the entire smoothie.
10. Spirulina Protein Shakes
A spirulina protein shake is a convenient option for early mornings or if you are on the go.
If you consistently work out or have a hemp, soy, or whey protein powder mix, adding spirulina to the mix is a super convenient way to consume it regularly.
While the addition of spirulina may not significantly enhance the flavor of your shake, it will drastically increase the protein and vitamin content of your drink!
Try for yourself!
Overall, there are many ways to consume spirulina that don’t involve an overwhelming spirulina flavor, whether in the form of a smoothie, soup, protein shake, or food dish.
Any of the options listed above are a great place to start!
If you’re feeling brave, you can mix it in with a glass of water or do as some do and dry-scoop it!
